Amethyst is derived from the Greek word amethustos (ἀμέθυστος), meaning "without being drunk". The Greeks believed that this stone kept them from getting drunk; the stone has an enlightening and sobering effect. The most beautiful amethysts are found in Uruguay, Brazil and South Africa.
Words that are often associated with amethyst are: clarification, calmness, inner peace, good night's sleep, balance, inventiveness, visualization, concentration, intuition and spirituality.
Amethyst has a protective and purifying effect. The stone promotes self-understanding and helps you to be honest with yourself about behaviors that can be harmful and not in service of your highest self. For example, it helps you to recognize and tackle addictions. In addition, the stone also provides insight into emotional processes through which certain (painful) experiences can be processed and avoiding behavior can also be changed in this area. Amethyst is also very suitable for purifying a room because of its cleansing effect. Together with rock crystal and rose quartz, it creates a harmonic atmosphere. Because it stimulates the upper chakras, it can promote intuition, spiritual growth and insight, especially for people who are at the beginning of their spiritual path. Amethyst also has a cleansing effect on the body and a positive influence on the nervous system, headaches and migraines and nightmares and other sleeping problems.
The quartz in amethyst quartz enhances the effect of the amethyst.
Amethyst can discolour under the influence of (bright) sunlight.
